Alpine Touch Receives SBA Award
HELENA, MT
Jo Alice Mospan, Montana District Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), announced that on May 20, 1999, SBA held a Small Business Week awards luncheon to pay tribute to outstanding small business owners and advocates from across Montana.
Mark and Vicki Southard of Alpine Touch in Choteau, Montana, were among those honored. Alpine Touch originated in the late 1950's in Whitefish, Montana by a butcher who created a seasoning for his rolled roast. People soon got hooked on the seasoning, and it wasn't long before the product appeared on the market.
Mark Southard bought the company in 1989 and moved it from Whitefish to Choteau, Montana. At that time, it was basically one product; the original all-purpose seasoning. Since purchasing the business, the Southards have doubled the gross sales of the business and created several new flavors, and they have had a major marketing overhaul. The product packaging has been updated with a new corporate identity, which will hopefully appeal to a more diversified and expanded market, allowing more people to experience the one-of-a-kind taste of Alpine Touch Spices. The move to Choteau also allowed the company to purchase a shop that doubled the manufacturing plant and included a retail store, which sells Made in Montana products.
Alpine Touch spices are primarily distributed through mainstream grocery stores in the Northwest and California and to over 3000 direct mail customers (many of which contact the company via the internet at www.alpinetouch.com). Alpine Touch has established itself as a formidable contender among 'name brand' competitors such as Johnny's and Lawry's. The seasoning has been a part of Montana families for three generations and has survived for over 35 years without the financial resources or perks that some companies enjoy, which is why this small business deserved to be recognized as the SBA's Montana Main Street Business of the Year. The Southards were nominated by Senator Conrad Burns.
